Red Smith
Red Smith was regarded as one of the most literate and amusing sportswriters of the 20th century. A 1922 East High graduate, he majored in journalism at Notre Dame graduating in 1927. Red worked for various newspapers around the country, and in 1945, he began a syndicated column in the New York Herald Tribune. He continued writing his column right up until his death in 1982. In 1972, he joined the New York Times and received a Pulitzer Prize for his sports writing in 1976.
The marker is located inside City Stadium, to the left of the North Baird Street entrance to City Stadium, and is accessible from northbound North Baird Street, north of its intersection with Cherry Street, Green Bay, Wisconsin 54301.
