W.W. Race Building     1871
109 E. Main Street
Built a decade before its neighbor to the west, this is the most elaborate of Omro's several fine Italianate style [sic] commercial buildings, the arcaded second story windows being an especially fine feature. W.W. Race ran a hardware business in the west store for many years while the east store was first occupied by Demmon Bros. boot and shore store. A few years later this space was occupied by a drugstore and drugstores have occupied it continuously since then. The most well-known pharmacist in this location was Clayton W. Stearns (22, 23, 43), who in 1933 allowed the first Omro library to be placed in his store. The library started as a shelf with books and later a back room was utilized to house the growing collection. The building is located with the Omro Downtown Historic District.
The W. W. Race Building and marker are located on westbound East Main Street / Wisconsin Highway 21, just east of its intersection with South Webster Avenue / County Highway F, at 109 East Main Street, Omro, Wisconsin 54963.
