Born June 17, 1830.
Died November 21, 1893.
Entered U.S. Vol. Army July, 1862,
as Major of 25th. Wisc. Infantry.
Brevetted Col. and Brigadier General
of U.S. Vol's March, 1865. "For Gallant
and meritorious service during the
war and For conspicuous gallantry at
the battle of Salkehatchie, S.C."
Bank Comptroller of Wisconsin,
1866 — 1870.
Member of 42nd. 43d. & 44th. Congresses.
Governor of Wisconsin 1882 – 1889.
U. S. Secretary of Agriculture,
1889 — 1893.
