Relocation of flood-prone homes on this island
began in the 1970's. One by one houses disappeared
and everyday life in the old Fourth Ward wasrecast
as memory. Seasoned by beloved tales of neighbors,
impromptu celebrations over successful days on the
river and in the woods, of how adversity provided
opportunity for recreation, memories meld into
legend. Ultimately it is a story that celebrates a
community of friends and family whose roots on
this island are older than statehood, of their
unfathomable connection to the river, and their joy
in life itself.
