John McCaffary was hanged in Kenosha on August 21, 1851, for the murder of his wife and buried here in an unmarked grave. Public outrage over his execution resulted in legislation that abolished the death penalty in Wisconsin on July 12, 1853.
The marker is located at Green Ridge Cemetery, 6604 7th Avenue, Kenosha, Wisconsin 54143.

NOTE: Once inside the cemetery, the marker is located on the far-west side of the cemetery (near the Sheridan Road (West Gate) entrance), accessible from Durkee Drive, between Funeral Road (to the south) and Gate Road (to the north).
