This building was an old log structure located east of Fond du Lac. It was moved here, reassembled, a forge added and the collection of blacksmith tools displayed to remind us that the "mighty man" played an important part in a society that relied on the horse to pull the plow, drag the timber, draw the carts and wagons and pull people through the countryside. Not only did the smith keep the horses shod, he also shaped the iron for tools and vehicles.

This smithy was made possible through memorial contributions to the late Simon Schaefer, former board member of the Fond du Lac County Historical Society and a moving force in the early years of the society.
The marker and building are located at the Historic Galloway House & Village at 336 Old Pioneer Road, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin 54935.
