The statue of Paul Bunyan was knocked over on Tuesday night,
September 17, 2002. Greg Devine, Tour Guide, and Norm Kessera, Camp
Manager, assessed the damage the next morning.
Within days, offers of help to reconstruct Paul Bunyan came from many
individuals and groups throughout the Chippewa Valley.

Kim Nessel volunteered to refurbish Paul Bunyan and took off work as
Batallion Chief for the Eau Claire Fire Department, Station No. 2, to repair the
statue during September-October, 2002. He reconstructed the fiberglass to
reattach the feet and, with the help of friends, poured concrete into the legs.
Then Mr. Nessel sanded and applied fresh paint to Paul.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2002, Kim Nessel and other firefighters and
friends, Scott Burkart, Marcy Bruflat, Dan Gluch, Mike Millwr, and Dan
Rydzik, returned Paul Bunyan to Carson Park and erected the 500 pound statue
next to Babe, the Blue Ox, in front of The Paul Bunyan Logging camp. The
beloved Eau Claire landmark was back home.

During the summer of 2003, Kim Nessel came back to The Paul Bunyan Camp and
refurbished Babe, the Blue Ox. Then, with the help of the Eau Claire Parks and
Recreation Department, he make sure that Paul and babe were "anchored" safely in front
of The Camp. Thanks to everyone who helped and supported this project, grief has
turned to gratitude, and the statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe, the Blue Ox, are new
again -- ready to greet visitors for many years to come.
