There are several interpretative signs at Rib Mountain State Park; some are tricky to locate. Park Road is a one-way loop around and through Rib Mountain State Park. Some of the markers are easily visible from Park Road, others are not. Here are detailed directions on locating the Rib Mountain State Park markers and sites. Each stop is linked to a Google Map or to a post with photos and more information:

The road leading to Rib Mountain State Park begins at the intersection of southbound Hummingbird Road / County Highway R and westbound Park Road, Wausau, Wisconsin 54401.

Travel about 2 miles along Park Road until you arrive at the ranger station / fee area.
NOTE: Rib Mountain State Park requires an annual pass or daily use fee to enter.

Drive past the ranger station and immediately on your right is a large parking lot adjacent to an outdoor amphitheater. Park close to the amphitheater. Follow the footpath to the left of the amphitheater seating. You will find the marker on your left.

Marker No. 2: Mountain View (44.92162,-89.691865)
Continue along Park Road about a half mile. You will come to another large parking lot on your right. The parking lot runs approximately east / west. At the farthest east end of the parking lot you will find a footbridge. The marker is located at the end of the footbridge.

Parking lot to access Markers 3-9 (44.920268,-89.693027)
Continue along Park Road about a quarter mile. You will come to another large parking lot on your left. This parking lot runs approximately northeast / southwest. Here you will find a concessions stand (southwest end) and restrooms (northeast end). From this parking lot are footpaths leading to several marker locations:

Marker No. 3: Welcome to Rib Mountain State Park Trail System! (3 markers)
The markers are mounted in a kiosk close to the parking lot side of the concessions stand; the concessions stand is adjacent to the southwest end of the parking lot. The markers kiosk and concessions stand are impossible to miss.

Marker No. 4: Ancient Ripples
Very close to Marker No. 3 you will see this sign at the base of a footpath. This footpath leads to the observation tower, the "highest point" and the "Queen's Chair". Follow this footpath less than a quarter mile; the marker will be on your right.

Marker No. 5: To Charles E. Parker
This marker is next to the Ancient Ripples marker.

Marker No. 6: Rib Mountain State Park
This marker is next to the Charles E. Parker marker.

Marker No. 7: Van Douser Observation Tower
Continue up the footpath a couple hundred feet from the Rib Mountain State Park marker. The observation tower is at the end of the footpath. In fact, it is clearly visible from the location of Markers 4-6. If you've got the stomach for it, climb to the top of this 60-foot tower for a spectacular view of nearby Wausau and the surrounding countryside.

Marker No. 8: Monadnocks
From the observation tower, head back down the footpath to the parking lot. From the parking lot entrance (at the southwest end of the parking lot), cross Park Road and travel to your right until you see the "South Deck" sign on your left. Follow the footpath about a tenth of a mile to the marker location (at the end of the footpath).

Marker No. 9: Communication Tower
From the Monadnocks marker, return to the parking lot. Now walk to the northeast end of the parking lot, to the footpath leading to the restrooms (the restrooms building is easily visible from the parking lot). From the location of the restrooms, the footpath continues to the left. Follow the footpath until you see the Communication Tower marker.

This completes the tour of markers at Rib Mountain State Park.

Enjoy your visit to Rib Mountain State Park!
