The first kindergarten
in the United States
was founded by
Margarethe Meyer Schurz
in this building in 1856.
Moved to the present site
and restored in 1956
by the
Watertown Historical Society.

The marker is located on the grounds of the Octagon House Museum / Watertown Historical Society, 919 Charles Street, at its intersection with Sunset Drive, Watertown, Wisconsin 53094.
